Be predictable if you want alignment. Unwelcome surprise is the enemy.

In other words, set a standard: “Do what you say you will do.”

Why the emphasis on predictability?

I’ll let Russ Ackoff explain.

The performance of a system depends on how the parts fit. Not each part’s performance taken separately.

How could anything fit together without some measure of deliberate predictability?

I always compare companies to coworking spaces. Is it just a bunch of individuals doing their own thing? (1+1+1=3) Or does gathering everyone together actually create something greater? (1+1+1=10).

Alignment is about fitment. Fitment starts with predictability.
